Cité
The
construction of this prestigious cathedral was undertaken by
the bishop of Paris in the mid-12th
century and completed almost two centuries later, in 1340. One of the chief architects was Pierre
de Montreuil who also built the Sainte-Chapelle.
The edifice
was extensively restored in the 19th century when the surrounding
area was cleared. The west front comprises
three
huge richly
carved doorways :
the portal of
the Virgin, the portal of the Last
Judgement and the portal of Saint-Anne. The rose-window above the kings' gallery,
measuring 10 metres in diameter, testifies to the daring
concepts of its architects.
